For school classes

Have you taken a look outside today? In our workshops, students sharpen their perception of the designed environment around them. This is shaped by landscapes and buildings, enlivened by our cultural heritage. We observe, discuss, imagine and immerse ourselves in the topic of building culture in level-appropriate offerings related to the school curriculum. All activities are conducted in German.

Dschungel-Tour-Theatertour-Tres-Camenzind
Theatre tour followed by a thematic exploration of green spaces and open areas, grades 1 to 4
An actor assuming the role of “Expedition Leader Albert” guides the class along mysterious paths through Patumbah Park. He has found Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book in the library of the old villa and in it the story of the brave mongoose Rikki Tikki Tavi. And he is convinced that the great battle with the cobra took place here in the Patumbah jungle. With Albert we experience the historic park from a surprising new perspective. Based on the characters from the jungle tour, Patumbah Park becomes vividly tangible to students as a special public space in the second half of the tour. They consider the use of such green spaces in densely populated areas. Afterwards the class can enjoy a packed picnic in the park.

Angebote-Workshop-Sumatra
Workshop for the special exhibition “Patumbah is a place in Sumatra”, grades 5 and 6
Around 150 years ago, many Swiss travelled to Sumatra in search of work and economic prosperity. Carl Grob, the builder of the villa, was one of them. Back then, such a journey by ship was a major undertaking, and life on another continent was associated with many adventures but also numerous difficulties.
Why did these Swiss leave their homeland, how did they earn money in “Dutch India”, and what did this mean for their employees and the locals? The students put themselves in the role of different characters and create fictional interviews.

Duration: 1 ¾ hour
Costs: CHF 120. Plus reduced admission of CHF 2 per student.
The costs for school classes in the City of Zurich are covered by the city’s “Schulkultur” programme (Office of School Culture).

Angebote-Workshop-Farbgeschichten
5th grade to secondary level
Equipped with vintage photos, we explore the “colour history” of Villa Patumbah. What did it look like inside the building in the past and what do we see today? But the rooms could also have a completely different appearance! Based on our findings, the students will design new colour schemes and use simple techniques to put them on paper.

Duration: 1 ¾ hour
Costs: CHF 120. Plus reduced admission of CHF 2 per student.

Afterwards the class can enjoy a packed picnic in the park.

Why can’t you just build a house wherever you have the most scenic view? Why are there more and more buildings and fewer and fewer meadows? With the help of visual materials, short films and a walk in the Patumbah Park, students will examine changes in the landscape. Working in groups, they will act as planners and develop a new neighbourhood. Upon request the workshop can be combined with a short tour of the villa.
Afterwards the class can enjoy a packed picnic in the park.

Offers for secondary levels I & II
Angebote-Workshop-Schulklassen-Sumatra
Workshop for the special exhibition “Patumbah is a place in Sumatra”
Where did Carl F. Grob get the money to build the grandiose Villa Patumbah? After a short tour of the villa, we will explore the history leading up to the building, which will take us to the former colony of “Dutch India”. Using pictures, texts and videos, the students will immerse themselves in the plantation economy in Sumatra and learn how Swiss emigrants profited from the colonial structures of that era. The history of colonialism in foreign lands can thus be tangibly experienced through a building in Zurich. The workshop will also take a look at the challenges faced by Sumatra today.

Duration: 90 minutes
Costs: CHF 120. Plus reduced admission of CHF 2 per student.
The costs for school classes in the City of Zurich are covered by the city’s “Schulkultur” programme (Office of School Culture).
Free of charge for vocational and technical schools in Canton Zurich.

Koloniales-Zuerich-Stadtführung
Guided tour in conjunction with the special exhibition “Patumbah is a place in Sumatra”, secondary level II
Traces of colonialism can be found locally, even though Switzerland itself was not a colonial power. Walking from Villa Patumbah to the Ethnographic Museum, we discover places with colonial ties and see buildings from a new perspective.

Duration: 2 hours
Costs: CHF 150

Villa-Salon-Detail-James-Batten
This interactive tour of Villa Patumbah allows participants to experience an architectural monument at first hand. They will discover the carefully restored rooms, diverse examples of refined craftsmanship, a density of colours, materials and finishing techniques rarely seen today – a chance to become directly acquainted with building culture with their own eyes. Upon request different focal points can be chosen (specific craftsmanship techniques, architectural and colonial history, renovation, building culture, garden culture).

Duration: 1 hour
Costs: CHF 80. Plus reduced admission of CHF 2 per student.

Fuehrung-plus-Berufsschulen
for vocational and technical secondary schools
We offer the guided tour for vocational and intermediate schools with an additional creative or thematic exploration unit, in which students work on a series of short exercises during the second part of the tour.

Creative focus: Colourful → more colourful → Villa Patumbah! Since the restoration, the colours of the villa are shining once again in full splendour – many having previously been covered over with a shade of white. We explore the question of how the rooms got their colours back and develop our own colour concept.

Thematic focus: How did Carl F. Grob, builder of the Villa Patumbah, arrive at his tremendous wealth? On the basis of first-hand reports and images, the living and working conditions on the plantations in colonial Sumatra are discussed.

Duration: 90 minutes
